1. Stop seeking validation.
Do not rely on others to confirm your value. Your worth is intrinsic. People are focused on their own lives, rejecting their desires onto the world. They are not in a position to validate your value emotionally or mentally. Their words and actions towards you are a reflection of their expectations, not yours.
2. Praise and Appreciation
Whether you receive praise or not is irrelevant. Realizing that seeking validation from others is not a reliable source is a crucial life lesson. If you perform good deeds with the expectation of recognition from others, you are setting yourself up for disappointment. Instead of seeking people’s appreciation, act out of your own volition. Do things because they make you feel good or because they align with your values. Applaud yourself. Whenever you take a positive step, improve your mood, or show kindness to others, give yourself credit. It is not important how others perceive you. What truly matters is your self-perception. Commit to engaging in positive self-talk. This practice leads to self-approval.
3. Motivation
It’s important to realize that no one can be your constant source of encouragement. While a friend may offer support during tough times, they cannot make you find joy in life. The responsibility lies with you to establish objectives and take the necessary steps to achieve them. Instead of relying on others to do the hard work, it’s essential to take action yourself. Goals don’t have to be grand, but they should propel you towards something meaningful to you. Waiting around for motivation is unproductive; it’s better to find any source of inspiration to get moving. Initiate action, get your body moving, involve yourself in external activities, and sense the momentum building up.
4. Understanding
Your upbringing, your life experiences, and the path you have walked are unique to you and no one else. The way you perceive life has been shaped by experiences that are entirely different from those of any other individual on this planet. Therefore, it is unrealistic to expect others to fully understand the depths of who you are. While some may resonate closely with you, others may not comprehend your point of view. Perhaps it is time to release the need for others to align their thoughts with yours. Allow them to embrace their own perspective, influenced by their distinct life encounters.
5. Stop Expecting Optimism
The possibilities in your day, relationships, or life can only be discovered by you. Regrettably, most individuals tend to seek out what is incorrect in order to rectify it and subsequently experience happiness. Simply pay attention to the conversations around you; you will hear numerous complaints and accusations. It is up to you whether you engage in that. Instead, endeavor to carve your own path by concentrating on what can go well rather than what is amiss.
6. Fulfillment
Constantly seeking someone else to complete your life is a never-ending pursuit. Stop anticipating encountering that one individual who can fulfill all your requirements. A precise definition of “fulfillment” is: “satisfaction or happiness stemming from fully developing one’s abilities or character.” That’s all there is to it.
Once you achieve fulfillment in your own life, you’ll be prepared to engage in healthy and mutually beneficial relationships with others. Focus on yourself first before expecting others to do the same.
7. Stop Expecting Joy
While others can momentarily boost your happiness, they cannot impose it on you. Remain open to the realization that happiness can enter your daily existence. Happiness stems from appreciating the positive aspects already present in your life, whether big or small. A man imprisoned in Afghanistan resided in a confined cell with a gray concrete floor and a metal bed. Only a small window at the top of the exterior wall allowed a narrow beam of light to enter in the morning. He eagerly awaited that light and expressed gratitude for its presence each day. On a chilly autumn day, as he trembled on the damp floor, a vibrant red leaf blew in and landed in front of him. He carefully picked it up and concealed it, knowing that even that small joy could be taken from him by his captors. He would retrieve it daily just to admire it. With time, it faded to a deep rust color, yet it remained the sole source of color in his world. Then, one day, he discovered a piece of bright blue thread in the corner beneath his bed and kept it hidden. These three joys—a beam of morning sunlight, a dried leaf, and a thread—sustained his sanity for three years. He eventually broke free and escaped to liberty. Upon hearing this, I realized that I am surrounded by joy—but only if I actively seek it.
8. Silliness
It’s important for us to embrace our silly side, allowing ourselves to be nonsensical, goofy, and irreverent at times. This lightheartedness prevents us from taking life too seriously. These moments are most enjoyable when shared with a friend, but there are times when no one is around. Engaging in activities like dancing with a cat, twirling in the living room, or giving a dramatic speech while standing on the bed can inject some silliness into our lives. Whether it’s making funny faces in the mirror, using a laundry detergent jug as weights, having a sword fight with dinner spoons, or letting go of inhibitions, these actions can help alleviate tension.
I don’t need anyone else to join me in acting silly, and it can be quite liberating. While I value appropriate behavior in society, it’s also important to cut ourselves some slack!

We all face challenges. While others can assist us in exploring potential solutions, if the issue is present in our lives, it is one we have contributed to creating. It is our responsibility to address what we have set in motion. Consider this—have any suggested solutions to your problems truly resonated with you? Often, we discover that recommendations from others fall short of the mark. Only those with a victim mentality anticipate being rescued by others. Those who emerge victorious evaluate their choices, take action, and adapt as necessary.
10. Stop Expecting Judgement
If we are raised with negative feedback, we anticipate criticism from others. When someone makes a remark, we try to decipher a hidden meaning in their words. We assume that everyone has ulterior motives.
We view everything that others do with suspicion. If someone gives us a strange look, we question if we have food stuck in our teeth, even if they might actually be admiring our haircut. Upon receiving a compliment, we ponder over the intentions behind it. We become individuals who actively seek out negative feedback, perceiving it in every situation.
Oprah Winfrey conducted a study where attractive women were provided with fake scars on their faces to observe how people reacted to them while walking in a city. Unbeknownst to the women, the fake scars were removed during a final makeup check. After returning, the women reported feeling judged, ridiculed, and pointed at by passersby as they walked, despite going out with their usual beautiful faces.
Their expectations of others influenced their perception of the situation, which turned out to be completely inaccurate.
