While bringing these items with you won’t upgrade your economy flight to a business or first class experience, they are Carry-On Must-Haves for long flights (and can be handy for shorter ones as well). These items have been found to make flights more tolerable.
Carry-On Must-Haves
1) Travel neck pillow
One of the first lessons we learned about surviving a long-haul flight was the importance of having a neck pillow.
While most international flights provide a pillow for back support, it’s essential to have one with neck support as well to prevent discomfort when your head tilts sideways or forward during naps.
There are various designs of airplane neck pillows available, from thick snake-like ones to unique inflatable options like the inflatable travel pillow that allows you to rest your head on the tray table in front of you.
Many travelers favor the Trtl travel pillow for its patented design that keeps the head upright while sleeping, providing neck support for resting on one side.
However, for those who prefer a more adjustable and squishable option for finding a comfortable sleeping position, the MLVOC travel pillow is recommended.
This memory foam pillow offers soft comfort all around, with a drawstring for adjusting the tightness around the neck. Its M-shape cradles the head upright without pushing it forward, and the pillowcase is machine washable and sweat-resistant.
Despite its features, the pillow is compact and lightweight, fitting into a small travel bag that compresses to half its size, making it easy to carry around.
With over 20,000 5-star reviews on Amazon, the MLVOC travel pillow is a popular choice among travelers.
2) Sleep mask
One of the top carry-on essentials for long flights is a sleep mask, which is also useful for blocking out early morning light in hotel rooms.
I (Janice) am a fan of the Mavogel cotton sleep eye mask – it’s incredibly soft!
Featuring a nose piece that can be bent to reduce light entering around the nose, this mask doesn’t press against your eyes like some cheaper alternatives.
The only downside is that this brand is so popular that Amazon occasionally runs out of stock.
Another mask that I own (and adore!) is the Alaska Bear sleep mask.
This lightweight foam eye mask is made from 100% natural mulberry silk on both sides and is shaped to gently curve around the eyes, providing ample room for your eyelashes.
Unlike other masks that extend over the nose, the Alaska Bear mask is designed not to do so, making it a great choice for those with sensitive skin. It doesn’t aggravate my rosacea, as some masks do when the nose area is positioned lower over the nose.
Next, we have the MZOO sleep eye mask, which George uses and enjoys.
Designed with contours that form a cup around each eye, this mask ensures no pressure is put on your eyes.
(Attention, ladies! Your mascara should stay intact with this mask on.)
3) Ear plugs
When it comes to catching some sleep during an overnight flight, ear plugs are essential.
While foam ear plugs may have a slightly scratchy exterior that can cause irritation to the ear canal (as it happened to me), these high-quality Ohropax ear plugs made from cotton wool and wax are a more comfortable and effective alternative.
Not only are they gentle on sensitive ears, but they are also superior in blocking out noise compared to foam plugs. They have become a must-have item for us on long flights!
It’s worth noting that Ohropax, a German company established in 1907, specializes in producing ear plugs.
Although these ear plugs may come at a slightly higher price point than standard foam ones, they are designed for multiple uses unlike foam plugs that should be discarded after one or two uses.
Essential health items to bring aboard the plane
4) Disinfecting wipes
It’s unfortunate to catch a cold or other illness while traveling by plane. With the prevalence of various viruses nowadays, the risk of getting infected is higher.
Regular handwashing with soap and water is crucial in preventing illnesses.
Avoid touching your face or rubbing your eyes until you have washed your hands, as germs can easily enter your body through these pathways.
When handwashing is not immediately possible, Wet Ones antibacterial wipes can help eliminate many harmful bacteria on your hands (up to 99.99%).
These wipes are also handy for cleaning high-touch surfaces on the plane.
Upon boarding, we always use them to sanitize the tray table, armrests, seatbelt buckle, TV screen, and other germ-laden airplane surfaces. (The airplane tray tables, along with the toilets, are among the most germ-infested areas on the aircraft.)
Personally, we prefer wipes made from plant-based materials.
Indeed, disinfecting wipes are a crucial item to have when traveling by plane in today’s world.
5) Hand sanitizer
Don’t forget to bring a travel-size hand sanitizer along. It’s essential for a long flight to protect yourself from germs in the confined space of the plane.
Moreover, it will be useful for maintaining cleanliness during your adventures at your destination.
6) Lubricant eye drops
Traveling by air can be tough on the eyes!
The controlled temperature and pressure inside an airplane cabin can create a dry atmosphere, leading to common issues like dry eyes.
Using moisturizing eye drops (artificial tears) can help alleviate dryness and redness in the eyes.
My optometrist suggested using preservative-free eye drops, such as Systane preservative-free eye drops, even though they are slightly more expensive than regular eye drops. However, we believe that investing in our eye health is important!
We now always include one of these compact squeeze bottles in our travel essentials kit.
7) Lip balm
During long flights, it’s not just your eyes that can become dry — the low humidity in airplane cabins can also cause chapped lips for many passengers.
The solution? Remember to bring along lip balm, a simple yet essential item to have on your list of “must-haves for long flights.”
Unlike certain toiletries, lip balms are not subject to the liquid restrictions for carry-on items on airplanes, so feel free to include lip balm in your in-flight essentials without any concerns.
8) Travel Pill Box
While you’ll be carrying your medication in your carry-on luggage, it’s inconvenient to have to rummage through your overhead bag or pull out your wheeled suitcase for just a few pills.
It’s much more practical to keep a compact travel pill organizer in your backpack or purse within easy reach, stocked with the necessary pills for the next 24 hours. (Don’t forget to add a couple of Tylenol as well, in case you develop a headache during the flight.)
9) Face mask
While masks are no longer mandatory on flights, we still carry a few KN95 masks (or similar) with us.
We put them on when navigating through crowded security lines and when boarding and disembarking the plane (especially when people are packed closely together).
The WWDOLL KN95 face mask is a reputable product endorsed by NBC News and provides the protection recommended by the CDC.
10) Disposable Toothbrush for Travel
It’s important to avoid using water from the airplane tap to brush your teeth, as it may be contaminated.
These compact Colgate Wisp mini-toothbrushes are perfect for travel, especially on airplanes, as they require no water for brushing.
Featuring a liquid-filled bead in the brush head, these disposable toothbrushes release toothpaste as you brush.
Designed to be small and portable, you can discreetly carry one in your hand when heading to the airplane bathroom.
They are convenient for on-the-go teeth brushing while traveling, helping to keep your mouth fresh at all times.
Long-haul flight essentials for comfort
11) Noise-canceling head phones
Is a baby crying in the seat behind you? Do you have a talkative neighbor? Are you bothered by engine noise?
You won’t have to deal with these distractions when you use the highly-rated BOSE QuietComfort 45 noise-canceling headphones.
These wireless headphones feature Bluetooth connectivity and provide an impressive 22 hours of battery life on a single charge.
Enjoy your movie or music in tranquility. These wireless headphones are ideal for travel – and for everyday use as well.
12) Noise-canceling earbuds
If you feel that the BOSE headphones are too large, consider trying out the Apple Airpods Pro (2nd Gen).
This model comes with an active noise-canceling feature, which makes them a valuable accessory for enjoying uninterrupted music while traveling by air. Additionally, they boast a long-lasting battery life.
In addition, BOSE offers its own noise-canceling earbuds. The BOSE QuietComfort Earbuds II are also an excellent choice for your personal music listening needs.
13) Travel shawl
Dear women, this tip is specifically for you.
Opt for a large travel scarf or pashmina. It serves as a blanket during your flight and provides additional warmth while exploring your destination.
Consider choosing an organic cotton travel wrap. This fabric is ideal as it is a natural fiber, soft, and can be conveniently machine washed.
14) Slipper socks
When traveling long-haul in business or first class, you typically receive a pair of socks in your amenity kit.
However, economy class passengers usually receive limited amenities.
For a lengthy journey, it is advisable to take off your shoes and wear warm socks for enhanced comfort. Your feet will appreciate it!
These cozy slipper socks are elastic (easy to slip on) and feature non-skid soles, providing secure footing while walking.
Note: Consider taking off the socks and putting your shoes back on when walking to the restroom. The floors there can be less than pristine at times.
15) Portable footrest
Introducing your new must-have item for long flights – a portable airplane footrest!
Think of it as a foot hammock that attaches to the seat in front of you. Elevating your feet, it enhances the comfort of flying in economy class and promotes better blood circulation in your legs.
Especially beneficial for shorter individuals who struggle to reach the floor, this footrest offers a simple solution for a more pleasant journey in the air.
As an alternative to carrying an extra item, consider placing your feet (in socks) on your backpack stored under the seat in front of you.
If that’s not high enough, you can add some volume to your backpack by using your sweater or jacket. At 5 feet 4 inches tall, I’ve found that even a slight elevation by resting my legs on my backpack significantly improves the comfort of sitting on a plane.
Essential travel accessories for women on the go
16) Face moisturizer
It’s crucial to pack your favorite facial moisturizer in your carry-on for a long flight, as the dry air on the airplane can dehydrate your skin. I am particularly fond of the luxurious hydrating cream from Avene. Using it during a lengthy flight can significantly help in keeping your skin hydrated and looking fresh. Experts recommend skipping makeup on long flights and instead applying a generous amount of moisturizer beforehand.
17) Hand lotion
Everyone adores the scent of lavender! EO Essential Oils offers a fantastic compact hand lotion infused with French lavender fragrance.
Your fellow passengers will appreciate it whenever you apply this lotion to your hands.
18) Hair ties
For individuals with long hair, it is advisable to secure it back while on the plane. This will enhance comfort by preventing hair from obstructing your face during sleep or meals. Therefore, a thick hair tie or a soft scrunchie is essential to include in your carry-on bag.
Food and water essentials
19) Collapsible water bottle
When flying, it is essential to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Airplane cabins are typically very dry, with humidity levels ranging from 10% to 20%, far below the recommended 30% to 60% for health and comfort. Drinking water during your flight helps combat dehydration and reduce the effects of jet lag. If you’re concerned about space in your carry-on for a hard-sided water bottle, consider a foldable SPECIAL MADE travel water bottle. This silicone bottle is sturdy when full but can be conveniently folded to save space when not in use. Additionally, it is BPA-free, eliminating the risk of exposure to harmful chemicals often found in plastic bottles. Using a reusable water bottle is not only convenient but also environmentally friendly.
20) Snacks
We recommend including some good snacks in your carry-on, especially if you are taking a long international flight.
During our recent overnight flight with Air Canada to Germany, our dinner mainly consisted of carbohydrates – potato salad, pasta without meat, a cold roll, and chocolate cake. (Apologies, Air Canada! Consider improving the food quality for economy class passengers on long flights.)
Before boarding, consider getting some small cheese and cracker packs from the airport to ensure you have some protein.
It’s also useful to have a few protein or granola bars on hand.
21) Gum or breath mints
It’s also a good idea to have gum without sugar (or breath mints) with you during the flight.
Having them handy will help maintain fresh breath while you’re seated. Chewing gum or sucking on a candy or mint can also assist in alleviating ear pressure during the flight, particularly during take-off and landing.
Other flight essentials
22) Passport and ticket organizer
To avoid the hassle of searching for your passport and boarding pass every time you pass through security, customs, and check-in, it’s essential to have a travel document organizer. This organizer will keep all your important travel documents, including your passport, airline tickets, and even the booking confirmation for your first night’s hotel, in one convenient place. Additionally, if you opt for electronic hotel confirmations and boarding passes, this organizer features a practical outside pocket for your phone.
23) A Kindle to read
After watching a few movies on a flight, you might feel tired of them. You might attempt to rest or nap, but the truth is, during a lengthy flight, you’re likely to be awake for several hours, simply trying to pass the time.
That’s why it’s essential to pack a Kindle in your carry-on bag for both short and long flights. (Some domestic flights don’t even offer movie screens, so there’s nothing to watch anyway.) Reading a good book can help time fly by!
Although we still enjoy the experience of reading a physical book, a Kindle is much more practical for travel.
You can have an entire library of books in one lightweight device. Additionally, the built-in adjustable light allows you to read without turning on the overhead light and disturbing your travel companion.
24) Instant stain remover
Having meals on airplanes can get a bit messy.
Tide To Go instant stain remover effectively deals with most stains – it at least improves their appearance significantly!
25) Portable charger
One more suggestion we have for long flights is to have a portable charger with you.
While newer airplanes are equipped with outlets or USB ports for charging your phone, iPad, and other gadgets, there is no certainty regarding the type of aircraft you will be flying on. Therefore, it’s wise to carry a portable USB charger at all times. (Moreover, it will be useful for keeping your devices powered during your journey.)
More travel essentials for the plane
Make sure to include the following items in your carry-on bag.
Although you may not need these items during the flight, they are crucial enough to keep with you instead of in your checked baggage.
- A spare set of clothes – Having an extra outfit can be helpful in case your luggage goes missing, ensuring you have fresh clothes for the start of your journey.
- Valuables – Always keep valuables like jewelry, camera, laptop, and other important items in your hand luggage.
- Prescription medications – Avoid placing your prescription medications in checked baggage to prevent difficulties in case of loss or delay, as replacing them quickly can be challenging.
Important documents
Remember to bring these essential documents in your carry-on bag:
- Your passport
- Airplane ticket(s)
- Other tickets – Such as train tickets
- Hotel and car rental confirmations
- Trip itinerary – It’s recommended to have a printed summary of your itinerary, detailing your daily accommodations and important timings for activities such as train schedules, flights, and tours.
That concludes our list of essential items for the plane!
For brief flights, some of these items may not be necessary. For instance, the neck pillow or sleep mask might be unnecessary.
However, for long-distance flights, these are the indispensable items we cannot imagine flying without.
