Fall is my favorite time to reset my space. Whether you’re a seasoned declutterer or just getting started, these tips will help you create a cozy and organized home this fall. When you are ready to organize your closets and your kitchen drawers read what we have put together for you.
1. Curate Your Book Collection
I love curling up with a good book, especially when the weather gets cooler. But if you’re anything like me, your bookshelves may be overflowing by now. Take some time to go through your collection—keep the ones you love, and donate the books that you didn’t enjoy or won’t reread. A curated book collection makes space for new favorites and keeps your space feeling open and tidy.
2. Purge Your Closet for the Season
Fall is the perfect time to assess both your summer and winter wardrobes. Pull out your summer clothes and pack away what you won’t need until next year, but don’t forget to evaluate if you’ll even want to wear those items again. This is also a great time to bring out your winter clothes—check for items that may need repair or no longer fit your style. Keep what you love and donate what no longer serves you.
3. Take Inventory of Your Candles
Who else loves burning candles all season long? I know I do, but my collection can get out of control. Before stocking up on more fall scents, use up what you already have. If there are some candles that are almost burnt out but still smell great, now’s the time to enjoy them. It’s an easy way to make space before treating yourself to some new seasonal favorites.
4. Store Away Summer Gear
Summer is over, and with it, all the fun outdoor items like pool floats, umbrellas, and outdoor toys. Take time to clean, dry, and store everything properly. It’ll not only save space but ensure that your summer gear is in good condition when next year rolls around.
5. Clean Out Your Pantry and Fridge
Fall brings a shift in our eating habits, from barbecues and fresh fruits to soups and hearty meals. Take everything out of your pantry and fridge, discard expired items, and donate anything still good that you won’t use. Once you’ve decluttered, organize by category—snacks, baking supplies, etc.—so you can easily find what you need for all those cozy fall recipes.
6. Declutter Your Linen Closet
I’m guilty of stuffing my linen closet and forgetting about it. Take this opportunity to go through your sheets, towels, and blankets. Toss or repurpose anything worn out and neatly organize what’s left. You’ll be thankful for it when the first cold front hits, and you need those heavier blankets!
7. Go Through Your Beauty Products
With cooler weather comes new skincare needs—think richer moisturizers and more hydrating products. Check your beauty stash for anything expired and toss what’s no longer good. It’s also a good time to pack away summer essentials like bug spray or sunscreen that won’t be needed for a while.
8. Prep Your Holiday Decorations
Getting ready for the holidays can be overwhelming, especially if you have to dig through unorganized boxes. Take stock of your holiday decorations now—see what you have, what needs repairing, and what you need to buy. Being prepared early can make the holidays much less stressful.
These decluttering ideas are designed to help you create a welcoming and organized home just in time for fall. Pick one or two to tackle this weekend, and you’ll be amazed at how much lighter your space (and your mind) feels!
